Forgot a PDF password? What you can and cannot do
Locked out of your own PDF. Where the password usually is, how to get the document again, and why tools that promise to break the lock are a risk.
The problem
A PDF asks for a password you do not remember: a bank statement, a payslip, or a file you locked yourself months ago.
Can I open a PDF if I forgot the password?
Not if it is a strong password: that is the point of the lock. But most forgotten passwords can be found, or the document got again.
Where is the password usually?
- Bank and payslip PDFs: a pattern explained in the email or on the sender's website, often your date of birth, postcode or part of your account number.
- Your own files: your password manager, or the Passwords app on your Mac.
- Files from someone else: they usually send it separately, by text or in another email.
How do I get the document again?
Banks, employers and services can resend a statement, or offer it from their website, often without a password once you are signed in.
Do PDF password recovery tools work?
Only against weak passwords. They guess, and a long password takes longer than anyone will wait. Online ones need you to upload the document, which defeats the reason it was locked. Only ever use them on files that are yours.
Our take
Ask for the file again before you try anything clever. The sender can resend it in a minute; guessing tools can take days and fail, and uploading a bank statement to a site that promises to unlock it is a worse risk than the one the password protected you from.
Next time
Save the password in the Passwords app with the file's name, or keep an unlocked copy somewhere private. See remove a password you know.
