How to initial every page of a PDF on a Mac

Contracts often need your initials on every page. Make an initials signature in Preview and paste it onto each page in the same spot, without printing.

The problem

A lease or contract needs your initials at the bottom of every one of its 14 pages and a full signature at the end, and you would rather not print it all.

How do I add initials to every page of a PDF on a Mac?

Make your initials a second signature in Preview, then copy and paste it onto each page.

  1. Open the PDF in Preview and click Show Markup Toolbar.
  2. Click the Sign button and Create Signature. Write just your initials, with the trackpad, your iPhone or the camera.
  3. On the first page, choose your initials from the Sign menu and drag them into place.
  4. With the initials selected, press Command C. Go to the next page and press Command V: the copy lands in the same spot.
  5. Repeat for each page, sign the last page with your full signature, and save.

Can Preview keep more than one signature?

Yes. Every signature you create stays in the Sign menu until you remove it, so your initials and full signature sit side by side for the next contract.

Our take

Initial in the same corner on every page. Initials exist to show you saw each page; putting them in the same place makes a missed page obvious at a glance, to you before you send it and to the other side when they check.

Before you send it

Open the saved file in another app and check every page. See sign so the signature stays if any are missing. Simply PDF keeps both your initials and your signature and writes them into each page when you save.
