How to print several PDFs at once on a Mac

Print a batch of PDFs in one go from Finder on a Mac without opening each, or from Preview with one print window, or merged so the order holds.

The problem

You have a folder of PDFs to print, invoices or forms or chapters, and opening each one to print it is twenty minutes of the same three clicks.

How do I print multiple PDFs at once on a Mac?

Select them in Finder and choose File > Print. Each one goes to your default printer, with its default settings, without opening.

Finder shows no print window, so set double sided, colour or tray as the printer's defaults first, in System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

How do I print several PDFs with one print window?

Open them all together in Preview (select them in Finder and press Command O), select them all in the sidebar, and choose File > Print. You get one print window, and the settings you choose apply to all of them.

Why did my PDFs print out of order?

Each file is its own print job, and printers do not always take jobs in the order they were sent, especially large ones. Merge the files into one PDF first: one job, one order, and one file to check before you print. See merge PDFs in order.

Our take

Merge before you print anything where the order matters. It costs a minute, and it turns a stack you have to sort by hand into one document you can flip through on screen and print exactly once. Merging is free in Simply PDF.
