How to redact a bank statement before sharing it
Landlords and lenders want proof of income, not your account number or every purchase. Hide what they do not need on a Mac, then check it is really gone.
The problem
A rental or loan application asks for bank statements. They need your name, the bank and the salary coming in. They do not need your full account number, card numbers, or every shop you visited last month.
Can I black out my account number on a bank statement?
Usually yes. Most organisations accept a statement with the account number cut to its last four digits and personal spending hidden. Some reject heavily redacted statements, so ask what they will accept first.
How do I redact a bank statement on a Mac?
- Make a copy of the statement: select it in Finder and press Command D. Work on the copy.
- Open the copy in Preview and use the Redact tool to mark the account number except its last digits, card numbers, and transactions they do not need.
- Save and close it. Preview's own warning says what happens: content marked for redaction is permanently deleted when the document is closed.
How do I check a redaction worked?
Open the saved copy and press Command F. Search for the account number: it must not be found. Then select across a black bar, copy, and paste into Notes: nothing should come out. A black box drawn with a shape tool fails both tests. See why, and how to redact properly.

Redact less, not more. A statement with every line blacked out invites the question of what you are hiding and is often refused; hiding only the account number and the purchases unrelated to the application gets the same privacy with none of the suspicion.
